Windows 11 Home to Pro Upgrade Not Working? Step-by-Step Fixes

Windows 11 Home to Pro Upgrade Not Working? Step-by-Step Fixes

Why is my Windows 11 Home to Pro upgrade not working?

The manual upgrade works only when Windows 11 Home is already activated and you enter a 25-character Windows 11 Pro product key under Settings > System > Activation > Change product key. When it fails, the usual causes are that Home is not activated, the PC already runs Pro, the key entered is for a different edition, or the PC cannot reach the online activation service, and each one has a simple fix below.

Quick checks before you try again

Before you change anything, look at what Windows is telling you. Find your message in the left column and start there.

If your message is not in the table, work through the steps below in order. Each one rules out a common cause before you move to the next.

How to fix the Home to Pro upgrade, step by step

Step 1: Check that Windows 11 Home is activated

Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation and check that Windows 11 Home shows as activated. Microsoft’s manual upgrade steps apply to a PC running an activated copy of Windows 11 Home, which means activating Home comes first.

If Home shows as not activated, fix that, then come back to this list. For activation help, see our guide to activating Windows 11 Pro with a product key.

Step 2: Confirm the PC is not already on Pro

On the same Activation page, check which edition is listed. If the Upgrade your edition of Windows option is missing, the PC may already be running Windows 11 Pro.

If it says Windows 11 Pro, there is nothing left to upgrade. If it says Windows 11 Home and the option is still missing, make a note of that for Step 7.

Step 3: Check the clock and your internet connection

Check the date and time under Start > Settings > Time & language > Date & time, run the network troubleshooter, then restart the PC and try again. Microsoft gives these fixes for error 0x80072F8F, which means the date and time are wrong or Windows is having trouble reaching the online activation service.

If you see 0xC004FC03, also make sure you’re connected to the internet and that your firewall isn’t blocking Windows from activating.

Step 4: Enter the Windows 11 Pro key again

Re-enter the 25-character Windows 11 Pro product key under Settings > System > Activation > Change product key. If your product key is not working on the first try, a typo is the easiest thing to rule out. Here are Microsoft’s steps:

  1. Select Start > Settings > System > Activation.
  2. Select Change product key.
  3. Enter the 25-character Windows 11 Pro product key.
  4. Select Next to start the upgrade to Windows 11 Pro.

A tip from us: copy the key from your delivery email and paste it in, rather than typing it by hand. That takes typos out of the picture.

Step 5: Run the Activation troubleshooter

Go to Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot to run the Activation troubleshooter. It is one of Microsoft’s general steps for activation errors, and for error 0xC004F210 it can help install the correct edition.

While you’re there, check two more things from the same Microsoft page: that the PC is up to date, and that it is running Windows 11 (you can type winver to see the version). If the error code changes after the troubleshooter runs, look up the new code in the list below.

Step 6: Restart and wait if the activation service is busy

If you see 0xC004E028, 0xD0000272 (or a related code) or 0x87e10bc6, restart the PC, wait a few minutes and run the troubleshooter again. These codes point to an activation request that is still running or a service that is temporarily unavailable, not to your PC. When the activation server is temporarily unavailable, Windows activates automatically once the service comes back online.

Step 7: Contact support with the error code

If the steps above don’t solve it, contact support with the edition, the activation status and the full error code. It also helps to tell us which steps you already tried.
