You’ve installed Windows 11 Pro, or you’re about to, and you have a 25-character product key ready. Activation is usually a two-minute job: open Settings, enter the key, and Windows checks it online. When it doesn’t go smoothly, Windows shows an error code that tells you what went wrong.
This guide walks through both: how to activate Windows 11 Pro with a product key, step by step, and what the most common activation error codes mean and how to fix them. Everything here follows Microsoft’s own activation guidance.
What activation actually does
Microsoft describes activation as the process that pairs a product key or digital license with your device’s hardware. It confirms the key is valid for that device. Windows 11 uses two activation methods:
- Product key: a 25-character code in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. You enter it during setup or afterwards in Settings.
- Digital license: activation that doesn’t need a key typed in. Microsoft notes that when you activate with a valid product key, the device is given a digital license based on that key.
If you’re activating with the product key you receive from us, you’ll use the product key method below. Your product page lists the device and activation details for your key.
Before you start
A few quick checks save most activation headaches:
- Confirm you’re on Windows 11. Press the Windows key, type winver and press Enter. The window shows your Windows version and build.
- Confirm the edition is Windows 11 Pro. Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation (or System > About) and look at the edition. A Pro key activates Windows 11 Pro. Microsoft is clear that Windows won’t activate if the installed edition doesn’t match the license.
- Sign in with an administrator account. Changing the product key needs admin rights. Check under Settings > Accounts > Your info: it should say Administrator under your name.
- Connect to the internet. Online activation needs a working connection, and your PC’s date and time must be correct.
- Have your key ready. Copy it exactly from your order email. Check the letters and numbers carefully if you type it by hand.
Coming from Windows 11 Home? Entering a Pro key on an activated copy of Home starts an edition upgrade to Pro. Microsoft says Home must be activated first. For the full Home-to-Pro and Windows 10 walkthrough, see our Windows 10 to Windows 11 Pro upgrade guide. This article focuses on activating Windows 11 Pro itself.
Step-by-step: activate Windows 11 Pro with your product key
You can enter the key during installation, when setup asks for it. If you skipped that screen or are activating an existing install, use Settings:
- Select Start, then open Settings.
- Go to System > Activation.
- Next to Change product key, select Change.
- If User Account Control asks for permission, select Yes, or enter an administrator name and password.
- Type or paste your 25-character Windows 11 Pro product key and select Next.
- If the key is valid, an Activate Windows window appears. Select Activate and keep the PC online while Windows contacts Microsoft’s activation service.
- Go back to Settings > System > Activation and check Activation state. It should say Windows is activated.
That’s it. You don’t need to reinstall anything, and your files and apps stay as they are.
Check your activation status
Microsoft lists four messages you might see on the Activation page:
| What you see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Windows is activated | Activated. No Microsoft account is linked yet. |
| Windows is activated with a digital license | Activated. No Microsoft account is linked to the digital license yet. |
| Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account | Activated and linked. This is the best state to be in. |
| Windows is not activated | Not activated. An error message explains why. See the error table below. |
Link your Microsoft account (recommended)
Microsoft calls linking your Microsoft account to your Windows license “essential,” because it lets you reactivate with the Activation troubleshooter after a significant hardware change, such as a new motherboard. To link it:
- Make sure you’re signed in as an administrator using your Microsoft account. An email address shows above Administrator under Settings > Accounts > Your info. If no email address appears, you’re on a local account.
- Go to Settings > System > Activation and select Add an account.
- Enter your Microsoft account email and password and select Sign in.
The Activation page should then show Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.
Start here if activation fails: the Activation troubleshooter
Before looking up error codes, run Microsoft’s built-in fix:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot. On Windows 11 this runs the Activation troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
- Follow the prompts. Microsoft says it runs diagnostics and attempts to fix most problems automatically.
Microsoft also notes that the error code can change after you run the troubleshooter or try again. If it does, look up the new code.
Common Windows 11 activation errors and how to fix them
Here are the codes our customers most often ask about, with Microsoft’s explanation and the fix.
| Error code | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 0xC004F034 | The key is invalid or is for a different version of Windows. | Re-enter the key carefully. Make sure it’s a Windows 11 Pro key and that Windows 11 Pro is installed. |
| 0xC004F210, 0xC004E016 | The key is for a different edition than the one installed. | Check your edition in Settings. Install the edition that matches your key, or contact us so we can confirm which edition your key is for. |
| 0xC004F212 | The key isn’t compatible with this edition. This often happens after a reinstall where a different edition was picked. | Run the Activation troubleshooter. Reinstall the edition you’re licensed for if needed. |
| 0xC004F00F | An Enterprise key was entered on Home or Pro. | Use the key that matches the installed edition. |
| 0x803F7001, 0x800704CF | Windows couldn’t find a valid license for this device. | Go to Settings > System > Activation > Change product key and enter your 25-character key. |
| 0xC004F211, 0xC004F213 | Hardware changed, or no product key was found on the device. | Enter your product key via Change product key, or run Troubleshoot and follow the link to reactivate after a hardware change. |
| 0xC004FC03, 0x8007267C | No internet connection, a firewall is blocking activation, or the server is temporarily unavailable. | Check your connection and firewall. For 0xC004FC03, you can also activate by phone (see below). |
| 0x80072F8F | The PC’s date and time are wrong, or Windows can’t reach the activation service. | Fix the date and time under Settings > Time & language > Date & time, then try again. |
| 0xC004E028 | Activation is already in progress. | Wait. The device should activate when the first request completes. |
| 0xC004C003, 0xC004C008 | Microsoft’s service didn’t accept the key for this device. | Run the troubleshooter once. If the error stays, contact our support team with the error code and your order number. We’ll look into it with you. |
“Your Windows license will expire soon”? Microsoft says this message usually means a volume license client is installed, the kind organizations manage centrally. If it’s a work PC, contact your IT administrator. If not, contact our support team and we’ll help you work out what’s installed.
For any code not listed here, Microsoft’s activation errors page has the full list.
Activate by phone (SLUI 04)
If online activation keeps failing because of connection problems, Microsoft offers phone activation:
- In the taskbar search box, type SLUI 04.
- Select SLUI 04 from the results.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Microsoft notes that Windows 11 Pro for Workstations and Pro Education must activate online and can’t use phone activation. Standard Windows 11 Pro can.
After a hardware change or reinstall
- Reinstalling on the same PC: if Windows 11 Pro was activated on that PC before, Microsoft says you can reinstall the same edition and choose I don’t have a product key during setup. Windows activates online automatically afterward. Pick Windows 11 Pro, not Home, when setup asks.
- Setup installed Home instead of Pro: Microsoft explains that on a PC that originally shipped with Windows 11, setup may use a license stored in the PC’s firmware and install that edition without asking for a key. If that happens, let setup finish, then enter your Windows 11 Pro key under Settings > System > Activation > Change product key to move to Pro.
- Replacing the motherboard or other major parts: Windows may no longer show as activated. If your Microsoft account was linked, run Troubleshoot on the Activation page and use the option for a recent hardware change. You can also try entering your product key again via Change product key.
Stuck on either one? Contact our support team before buying anything new. Most of these issues can be fixed.
Frequently asked questions
Go to Start > Settings > System > Activation, select Change next to Change product key, enter the 25-character key and select Next. You can also enter it during Windows setup when you’re asked for a product key.
Open Settings > System > Activation and look at Activation state. It will say Windows is activated, activated with a digital license, or activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account. If it says Windows is not activated, an error message explains why.
A Windows 11 Pro key only activates Windows 11 Pro. If Windows 11 Home is installed, you’ll see an edition error such as 0xC004F210. Check your edition in Settings and install the matching one. If you’re not sure which edition your key is for, contact our support team.
Online activation needs internet access. If you can’t get online activation to work because of a connection problem, Microsoft offers phone activation: type SLUI 04 in the taskbar search box and follow the instructions.
It isn’t required to activate, but Microsoft strongly recommends it. A linked account lets you use the Activation troubleshooter to reactivate after a significant hardware change, such as a motherboard replacement.
Run the Activation troubleshooter first, then check the error table above. If the error stays, email our support team with the error code, a screenshot of Settings > System > Activation, and your order number. We’ll work through it with you.
