This pack contains five Windows Server 2022 Remote Desktop Services (RDS) User Client Access Licenses. It licenses five named users to connect to Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server 2022, such as full remote desktop sessions or RemoteApp programs hosted on your server.

Please note: RDS CALs are an add-on license. The Windows Server 2022 server license and Windows Server CALs are sold separately.

What is an RDS User CAL?

Remote Desktop Services lets users run desktops and applications on a central Windows Server, from wherever they work. Microsoft requires an RDS CAL for each user or device that connects to these services. An RDS User CAL is assigned to one person, who can then connect from multiple devices.

The RDS CAL is required in addition to a Windows Server CAL. Each Remote Desktop user needs both:

• A Windows Server 2022 CAL (User or Device), for access to the server
• A Windows Server 2022 RDS CAL, for access to Remote Desktop Services

• Businesses giving up to five staff remote access to desktops or applications hosted on a Windows Server 2022 server
• Teams that work from home, from branch offices or on several devices
• IT administrators expanding an existing Remote Desktop Services deployment by five users

Compatibility and requirements

• For Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server 2022 Standard or Datacenter
• Must be installed and activated on a Remote Desktop license server (the Remote Desktop Licensing role), which must run Windows Server 2022 or later
• Your Remote Desktop Session Host should be set to Per User licensing mode
• Per User RDS licensing is designed for Active Directory domain environments. If your server is in a workgroup, check Microsoft’s RDS documentation before purchasing.
• Microsoft’s compatibility rules generally allow RDS 2022 CALs to be used with some earlier Session Host versions. Please confirm against Microsoft’s RDS CAL compatibility guidance for your setup.

Frequently asked questions

Does this pack include Windows Server CALs?

No. RDS CALs only cover Remote Desktop Services. Each of your five users also needs a Windows Server 2022 CAL, which is sold separately.

How many people can use this pack?

Five. Each RDS User CAL is assigned to one named user, and that user can connect from multiple devices.

Do I need RDS CALs just to manage my server remotely?

Generally, no. Windows Server includes Remote Desktop for Administration, which allows up to two simultaneous administrative connections without RDS CALs. RDS CALs are needed when users connect to Remote Desktop Services to work.

Where do I activate these licenses?

On the server running the Remote Desktop Licensing role, using Remote Desktop Licensing Manager. Once the CALs are installed, point your Remote Desktop Session Host to that license server.
