Here’s how to install Office 2024 on Windows: start with the instructions in your order email, then redeem your product key, download the installer, and install and activate Office.
Got a product key for Office 2024 and a Windows PC ready to go? This guide covers the whole job from start to finish: redeeming your key, downloading the installer, installing, activating, and fixing the install problems people run into most.
It’s written for Office Home 2024 and Office Home & Business 2024, which install through a Microsoft account. If you have Office 2024 Professional Plus, it installs differently, with Microsoft’s Office Deployment Tool. Our separate Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 install guide walks you through that one.
One rule before you start: follow the instructions in your order email and on your product page first. They’re specific to the product key you receive, and your product page lists the device and activation details. The steps below are Microsoft’s standard process.
Before you start: a 5-minute checklist
Remove other versions of Office first
New PCs often come with a Microsoft 365 trial, and older PCs may have an earlier Office installed. Two versions side by side can block the install. Microsoft notes in particular that you can’t mix 32-bit and 64-bit Office on the same PC.
Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
Search for Office and Microsoft 365.
Select the … menu next to each one, then Uninstall.
Restart your PC.
Uninstalling Office doesn’t delete your documents.
Step 1: Redeem your product key
Microsoft says you redeem a product key once, and that adds the Office license to your Microsoft account.
Go to microsoft365.com/setup (office.com/setup also works).
Sign in with your Microsoft account, or create one. Microsoft recommends remembering this account, because it’s how you’ll reinstall Office later without the key.
Enter your product key without hyphens if asked. If you don’t see a box for the key, Microsoft says it was entered for you automatically.
Follow the prompts to finish.
Seeing “This product key has already been used”? Microsoft explains this means the key has already been redeemed to a Microsoft account. Skip to Step 2 and sign in with that account. If you’re not sure which account was used, contact our support team and we’ll help you work it out.
Step 2: Download Office
Go to m365.cloud.microsoft/apps and select Sign in.
Sign in with the same Microsoft account you used in Step 1.
On the Apps page, select Install apps, then Install.
Microsoft installs the 64-bit version by default, unless it finds 32-bit Office already on the PC. In that case it installs 32-bit. To switch, uninstall the existing Office first.
Don’t see an install option? That usually means the key wasn’t redeemed to this account. Check you’re signed in with the right Microsoft account, then go back to Step 1.
Step 3: Install Office
Open the downloaded file. Depending on your browser, select Run (Edge), Setup (Chrome) or Save File (Firefox).
When Windows asks Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?, select Yes.
The installation starts. Keep the PC on and connected.
When you see “You’re all set! Office is installed now,” select Close.
Step 4: Activate Office
Select Start and type Word.
Open Word from the results.
Accept the license agreement when it appears.
That’s it. Microsoft says Office is now activated and ready to use. If Office has trouble activating, the Activation Wizard opens. Follow its steps to finish.
Check the other apps, too: Office Home 2024 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, and Office Home & Business 2024 adds Outlook.
Fixing common Office 2024 install problems
| Problem | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Unsupported operating system error | You downloaded the Mac version on a PC (or vice versa), or the OS isn’t supported. | Make sure your product is the Windows version and your Windows version is supported. |
| Error about 32-bit and 64-bit | A different-bit version of Office (or Visio/Project) is already installed. | Uninstall all Office products, restart, then install again. |
| Install is very slow or stuck | Microsoft points to the internet connection, firewall or antivirus. | Try a wired connection. Or use Microsoft’s offline installer, which Microsoft says can get around proxy, firewall, antivirus and connection problems. |
| Install fails partway | A leftover or damaged earlier install. | Restart and try again. If it still fails, fully uninstall Office and reinstall. |
| No Install button after signing in | The key wasn’t redeemed to this Microsoft account. | Sign in with the right account, or redeem the key at microsoft365.com/setup. |
| Can’t install to a different drive | Microsoft only lets Office install on the drive where Windows is installed, usually C:. | Free up space on C: and install there. |
| Word says “Unlicensed Product” or “We couldn’t find any Office products” | Signed in with a different account, or more than one copy of Office is installed. | Microsoft’s fix: sign in to Office with the account you redeemed the key with, and uninstall any other copies of Office you aren’t using, then restart. |
Good to know about uninstalling: Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter tool can’t uninstall Office 2024. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps instead, or Microsoft’s manual uninstall steps.
If none of this fixes it, don’t spend hours on it. Contact our support team with a screenshot of the error and your order number, and we’ll take it from there.
Reinstalling Office 2024 later
You don’t need your product key again to reinstall. Sign in at m365.cloud.microsoft/apps with the same Microsoft account, select Install apps, and repeat Steps 3 and 4. This is why Microsoft says to remember which account you redeemed the key with. Your product page lists the device details for your key.

Microsoft installs 64-bit by default, which suits most PCs. It installs 32-bit only if 32-bit Office is already on the PC. You can’t mix the two, so to switch you need to uninstall Office first.
It depends on your internet speed and PC. If it seems stuck, Microsoft suggests checking your connection, firewall and antivirus, or using the offline installer.
