This guide shows you how to install Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 on a Windows PC using the Office Deployment Tool, the free installer Microsoft provides for this edition. It takes about six short steps. You’ll need your product key from your order email.
Important: Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 is a volume edition. It does not install from office.com/setup or the Microsoft 365 website. If you install from there, you’ll get Microsoft 365 instead, and your key won’t work with it.
Before you start
- PC only. This edition is for Windows. It does not install on a Mac.
- A supported version of Windows. Microsoft lists Windows 11 (plus Windows 10 LTSC 2019 and 2021, and Windows Server 2022 and 2025) as supported for Office LTSC 2024. To check your version, press the Windows key, type winver and press Enter.
- Enough computer. At least a 1.1 GHz two-core processor, 4 GB of memory, 4 GB of free disk space and a 1280 x 768 screen.
- Administrator rights. You must be signed in to Windows with an account that can install programs.
- An internet connection for the download and for online activation.
- Your 25-character product key (five groups of five, like XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX).
Uninstall other versions of Office first
Remove any other Office or Microsoft 365 apps before you begin, including the trial that comes on many new PCs. Microsoft recommends uninstalling earlier versions before installing Office LTSC 2024. Two versions on the same PC can block the install. For example, you can’t mix 32-bit and 64-bit Office on one PC, and all Office products on a PC must use the same update channel.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Office and Microsoft 365.
- For each one, select the … menu > Uninstall, and follow the prompts.
- Restart your PC.
Your documents are not deleted when you uninstall Office.
Step 1: Download and extract the Office Deployment Tool
- Create a folder called ODT on your C: drive, so the path is C:\ODT. (Open File Explorer, select This PC > Local Disk (C:), then New > Folder.)
- Go to Microsoft’s Office Deployment Tool download page and select Download.
- Open the downloaded file (its name starts with officedeploymenttool). If Windows asks whether to allow changes, select Yes.
- Accept the license terms, then select Continue.
- When asked where to save the extracted files, choose C:\ODT and select OK.
- Open C:\ODT. You should see setup.exe and a few sample .xml files. You can ignore the sample files.
Only download the tool from microsoft.com. Don’t use installers from other websites or file-sharing links.
Step 2: Create the configuration file
The configuration file tells the tool exactly which Office to install: Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024, 64-bit, in English (US), with all apps included.
- Open Notepad (press the Windows key, type Notepad, press Enter).
- Copy everything in the box below and paste it into Notepad.
- Select File > Save as.
- Go to the C:\ODT folder.
- Set Save as type to All files (*.*).
- For File name, type configuration.xml and select Save. If Windows asks to replace an existing file, select Yes.
<Configuration>
<!-- Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 (volume), 64-bit, English (US) -->
<Add OfficeClientEdition="64" Channel="PerpetualVL2024">
<Product ID="ProPlus2024Volume">
<Language ID="en-us" />
<!-- To match your Windows language instead, delete the en-us line above
and remove the comment marks around the next line:
<Language ID="MatchOS" Fallback="en-us" />
-->
<!-- Optional: to skip an app, move it outside this comment.
All apps are installed by default.
<ExcludeApp ID="Access" />
<ExcludeApp ID="Excel" />
<ExcludeApp ID="Groove" />
<ExcludeApp ID="OneNote" />
<ExcludeApp ID="Outlook" />
<ExcludeApp ID="PowerPoint" />
<ExcludeApp ID="Word" />
-->
</Product>
</Add>
<Updates Enabled="TRUE" Channel="PerpetualVL2024" />
<RemoveMSI />
<Display Level="Full" />
</Configuration>
Make sure the file is named configuration.xml and not configuration.xml.txt. In File Explorer, select View > Show > File name extensions to check.
Optional changes to the file
- Match your Windows language: delete the line
<Language ID="en-us" />and use theMatchOSline instead (remove the comment marks around it). If your Windows language isn’t available, English (US) is used. - Skip an app you don’t want (for example Access): move that app’s
<ExcludeApp ID="..." />line out of the comment block, above the</Product>line. “Groove” means OneDrive. By default nothing is skipped. - Leave everything else as it is. The edition (ProPlus2024Volume) and channel (PerpetualVL2024) must stay exactly as shown for your key to work.
Step 3: Open Command Prompt as administrator
- Press the Windows key and type cmd.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes when Windows asks.
- Type the command below and press Enter to go to your ODT folder:
cd /d C:\ODT
The line on screen should now start with C:\ODT>.
Step 4 (optional): Download the Office files first
This step is optional. It downloads all the Office files into C:\ODT before installing, which can help on a slow or unreliable connection. If your internet is good, skip to Step 5.
setup.exe /download configuration.xml
It may look like nothing is happening, but the download is running. When it’s done, the C:\ODT> prompt comes back and you’ll see a new Office folder inside C:\ODT.
Step 5: Install Office
In the same administrator Command Prompt (still at C:\ODT>), type this and press Enter:
setup.exe /configure configuration.xml
- An Office installer window opens and shows progress.
- The install usually takes 10 to 30 minutes, depending on your internet speed and PC. Keep the PC on and connected.
- When it finishes, the C:\ODT> prompt comes back. Close the installer window and Command Prompt.
- Open the Start menu. You should see Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and Access.
Step 6: Enter your product key and activate
Option A: In Word (easiest)
- Open Word.
- Select File > Account.
- Under Product Information, select Change Product Key.
- Enter your 25-character product key.
- Select Activate.
When activation succeeds, File > Account shows the product as activated.
Option B: With a command
Open Command Prompt as administrator again (see Step 3). Type each command below and press Enter after each. Replace the X’s with your own product key.
cd /d "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16"
cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
cscript ospp.vbs /act
If the first command says “The system cannot find the path specified”, use cd /d "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16" instead. To find the file on your PC, run dir /s /b "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ospp.vbs".
To check the result, run cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus. It shows the license status for the key you installed.
If online activation fails: activate by phone
Phone activation in an Office app
- Open any Office app, such as Word. If the activation window doesn’t appear, go to File > Account and choose to activate.
- In the Activation Wizard, select I want to activate the software by telephone, then select Next. (If nothing happens, press Enter.)
- Under Step 1, select your country or region, then call the Product Activation Center number shown.
- When asked, give the Installation ID shown under Step 2.
- Type the Confirmation ID you’re given into the boxes under Step 3.
- Select Next to finish.
If you see “Telephone activation is no longer supported for your product”, see Microsoft’s help article on that message.
Phone activation with a command
In an administrator Command Prompt, go to the Office16 folder (see Option B above), then show your Installation ID:
cscript ospp.vbs /dinstid
Call the Product Activation Center for your country or region and give them the Installation ID. Then enter the Confirmation ID they give you, without dashes or spaces, in place of the Y’s:
cscript ospp.vbs /actcid:YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Run cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus to confirm Office is activated.
Troubleshooting
Microsoft 365 installed instead of Office 2024
This happens if Office was installed from office.com/setup, the Microsoft 365 website, or an Office app that came with your PC. Those install Microsoft 365, which your key can’t activate. Uninstall Microsoft 365 (see Before you start), restart, and follow this guide from Step 1.
“This product key can’t be used” or a similar key error
Your key is for the volume edition (ProPlus2024Volume). It won’t work on a retail or Microsoft 365 version of Office. Check File > Account. If it doesn’t say Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024, uninstall that version and reinstall with this guide. Make sure the Product ID line in configuration.xml reads exactly ProPlus2024Volume.
Error 30088 or another error code during install
- Error 30088: Microsoft says this usually means a network connection problem or low disk space. Free up disk space, restart, and run Step 5 again. If you use a VPN or proxy, turn it off temporarily. See Microsoft’s help article for error 30088.
- The command fails right away or nothing happens: make sure you’re in C:\ODT (Step 3), that the file is named configuration.xml (not .txt), and that you typed the command exactly.
- The install stops because another version of Office is found: another Office or Microsoft 365 version is still installed. Uninstall it, restart, and try again.
- Any other error: write down the error code and contact us (below).
A Windows SmartScreen or security warning appears
When you open the Office Deployment Tool or setup.exe, Windows may ask you to confirm. Check that the publisher shown is Microsoft Corporation before you continue. If it shows any other publisher, don’t run it. Delete the file and download the tool again from Microsoft’s page in Step 1.
