Is there a Visio for Mac?
Microsoft does not make a desktop version of Visio for macOS, but Visio for the web lets you view, create and edit diagrams in the Safari or Chrome browser on a Mac, with nothing to install. If you need the full Visio desktop app, it comes with Visio Plan 2 or with Visio Professional or Visio Standard 2024, and it runs on Windows, which a Mac can run in a Windows 11 virtual machine.

The right option depends on what you need to do with the file: open it, comment on it, edit it in a browser, or work in the full desktop app.
Option 1: Visio for the web in Safari or Chrome
This is the quickest way to start on a Mac. Visio for the web runs in the Safari or Chrome browser on your Mac, and there’s nothing to install. Microsoft’s web FAQ also lists Microsoft Edge and Mozilla Firefox among the supported browsers.
Which plans include it
Visio for the web comes with Visio Plan 1 and Visio Plan 2, and at no additional cost with all Microsoft 365 commercial and education plans. If you have Visio Plan 1, the web app is the only way to access Visio.
One point that surprises people: Visio is not included in the Microsoft 365 suite and is sold as a stand-alone application, even though Microsoft 365 commercial and education plans include Visio for the web.
Check your account first
This matters for many Mac users. Visio for the web needs a Microsoft 365 work or school account, and a personal Microsoft account email address is not supported. If you sign in with a personal email address today, set up a work or school account before you choose a plan.
What you can make
Microsoft lists block diagrams, flowcharts and cross-functional flowcharts, UML diagrams, SDL diagrams, Azure diagrams, network diagrams and Venn diagrams among the diagrams you can create and edit in the browser, and you can also view other diagram types that can’t be created there.
Storage and sign-in
Visio Plan 1 and Visio Plan 2 both come with 2 GB of OneDrive storage for work or school. To open the web app, go to visio.cloud.microsoft and sign in, following Microsoft’s access steps.
If you want the browser app and the desktop app in one plan, Microsoft Visio Plan 2 – One Year License covers both. Visio Plan 2 includes the Visio web app and the Visio desktop app, on up to 5 PCs per user.
What Visio for the web cannot do
The browser version covers a lot, but not everything. Before you settle on it, check these three limits:
- Some diagram types are desktop-only. In Visio Plan 2, Microsoft marks BPMN, floor plans, timelines and Gantt charts, and some business diagrams as available only in the desktop app.
- Data linking. Data linking is only available in the Visio desktop app, although Visio for the web can view data-linked diagrams.
- Editing on mobile. On mobile devices, editing in Visio for the web needs a screen of 9 inches or larger.
If any of these are part of your work, you’ll want the desktop app, which on a Mac means Option 2.
Option 2: Run the Visio desktop app in Windows 11 on your Mac
Because there is no desktop version of Visio for macOS, the desktop route goes through Windows. For Macs with Apple M1, M2 and M3 chips, Microsoft lists two supported options: a Windows 365 Cloud PC, and Windows 11 in a virtual machine using a Microsoft-supported virtualization app. The virtual machine route runs Windows 11 on the Mac itself.
A few points from Microsoft’s Windows 11 on Mac page:
- Each Windows 11 virtual machine needs its own Windows 11 Pro license.
- Windows 11 Pro product keys work for both the x64 and Arm versions.
- x64 apps run through emulation on Arm.

Option 3: View or comment for free
If someone sent you a .vsdx file and you only need to read it, you may not need to buy anything.
- View in the browser. You can use Visio for the web without a license to view basic Visio files: sign in to your Microsoft 365 account, upload the file to OneDrive, then select it there to open a read-only view.
- Comment in Microsoft Teams. In Teams, team members can view, comment on and share Visio diagrams with or without a Visio license.
- View on iPhone and iPad. Visio files stored online can be viewed on iPhone and iPad.

Which Visio fits a Mac user
- Browser only, occasional diagrams: Visio Plan 2’s web access, or a Microsoft 365 commercial plan that includes Visio for the web.
- Desktop features and offline work: Visio Plan 2, whose desktop app has offline and local file support, or Visio Professional 2024 or Visio Standard 2024, in Windows 11. Ask us about your Mac setup first.
