Decide based on how you’ll protect data if a laptop goes missing, whether anyone needs remote access to an office PC, and whether you’ll manage PCs centrally.
Most “Home vs Pro” comparisons list two dozen features and leave you to work out which ones matter. For a small business, the decision usually comes down to a handful of questions: How do you protect data if a laptop goes missing? Does anyone need to connect to an office PC remotely? Will you manage PCs centrally, now or later?
This guide skips the feature-list noise. It covers what both editions share, the Pro features that make a real difference in a small office, and which edition fits common business setups.
What Home and Pro have in common
Windows 11 Home is not a stripped-down edition. According to Microsoft, both Home and Pro include:
So the edition doesn’t change how Windows looks or which everyday apps run. Office, accounting software and browsers work the same on both. The differences are in security controls, remote access and management.
The five Pro features that matter most to small businesses
Microsoft says Pro “builds on the features of Windows Home, with many extra features to meet the needs of small and medium-sized businesses.” Here are the ones that tend to matter in practice.
1. BitLocker drive encryption
Microsoft lists BitLocker as a Pro feature, along with BitLocker to Go for USB drives, which Microsoft says is available in Pro and above.
Why it matters: if a laptop with customer records, invoices or payroll files is lost or stolen, encryption keeps the data unreadable. BitLocker gives you more control over this than Home’s device encryption, and BitLocker to Go lets you encrypt the USB sticks staff carry files on.
Ask yourself: do any of your laptops leave the office with sensitive data on them?
2. Remote Desktop (hosting)
Microsoft is specific about this: the PC you connect to must run Windows Pro. The device you connect from can run any edition of Windows, or even macOS, iOS or Android, using Microsoft’s apps.
Why it matters: if you or your IT provider want to sign in to an office PC from home, or reach a front-desk PC after hours, that PC needs Pro. Home PCs can still connect out to a Pro PC.
Ask yourself: does anyone need to work on an office computer from somewhere else?
3. Joining Microsoft Entra ID or a domain
Microsoft lists joining a domain or Microsoft Entra ID as a Pro feature. Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) is the account system behind Microsoft 365 for business. Microsoft notes it lets users “perform single sign-on across Windows, Microsoft 365, and other cloud-hosted apps and services.”
Why it matters: with Entra ID join, staff sign in to their PC with their work account. Access can be managed centrally, and you can take it away when someone leaves. If you run a Windows Server, domain join gives you the same control on-site.
Ask yourself: do you use Microsoft 365 business accounts, or plan to?
4. Central management: Group Policy, MDM and Windows Update for Business
Pro supports the tools IT providers use to manage PCs. According to Microsoft, these include:
Why it matters: with one or two PCs you can manage each one by hand. With more, or with an outside IT provider, central management saves time and keeps every PC set up the same way.
Ask yourself: will someone other than the PC’s user be responsible for keeping it secure and up to date?
5. Virtualization: Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox
Why it matters: a sandbox is a safe place to open an unexpected attachment or try out software before installing it for real. Hyper-V helps if you need to run older line-of-business software or test setups.
Ask yourself: do you test software, run legacy apps, or want a safe place to open unknown files?
One more: Assigned Access (kiosk mode)
Microsoft lists Assigned Access for Pro. It locks a PC to a single app or a set of apps, which is useful for a check-in screen, a shared reception PC or a point-of-sale display.

Which edition fits your business?
| Your setup | Our suggestion | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo freelancer, one laptop, no shared data, no remote access | Home can be enough | You won’t use central management or Remote Desktop hosting. Device encryption covers the basics on supported hardware. |
| Solo professional handling client or financial data | Pro | BitLocker protects the laptop and USB drives if they’re lost. |
| Small office with Microsoft 365 business accounts | Pro on each PC | Entra ID join and MDM let you manage sign-ins and settings centrally. |
| Office PC you reach from home | Pro on the office PC | Microsoft requires Pro on the PC you connect to. Your home device can run any edition. |
| Reception, kiosk or shared check-in PC | Pro | Assigned Access locks the PC to the apps it needs. |
| IT provider managing your PCs | Pro | Group Policy, Windows Update for Business and Autopilot are what they’ll use. |
Mixed setups are fine. A business can run Pro on office desktops and Home on a personal-use laptop. Just put Pro wherever you need remote access, central management or BitLocker.
