Visio Viewer: How to Open and View VSDX Files Without Visio

Visio Viewer: How to Open and View VSDX Files Without Visio

How can you open a Visio file without Visio?

The simplest free way is to sign in to your Microsoft 365 account, upload the file to OneDrive and open it, which shows it read-only in Visio for the web, and Microsoft Teams also lets team members view and comment with or without a Visio license. Visio Viewer can open, view and print Visio drawings, but to edit, save or create diagrams you need a full version of Visio.

Free ways to view Visio files compared

Someone sent you a .vsdx file and you don’t have Visio. Here is what each option can do, with “Not stated” wherever Microsoft doesn’t say.

For people without a Visio license, Microsoft recommends Visio for the web, instead of Visio Viewer, to view Visio files. That makes the browser the natural place to start, and the steps below walk through it.

Which free option fits your task

How to open a Visio file free in your browser

Step 1: Sign in to your Microsoft account

Sign in to your Microsoft 365 account in your web browser. Microsoft’s free viewing steps start with that sign-in, and you don’t need a Visio license to view basic Visio files.

Step 2: Upload the Visio file to OneDrive

Upload the .vsdx or .vsd file to your OneDrive. Once you’re signed in, you can reach any Visio file stored in OneDrive or SharePoint, which means a file a colleague shared through SharePoint works too.

Step 3: Select the file to open it in Visio for the web

Select the file in OneDrive to open it. The file opens in your browser in Visio for the web, with nothing to install.

Step 4: Review the diagram in read-only view

Review the diagram in the read-only view that opens. Microsoft describes this as the ability to see the file in read-only view, which means you can read and check the diagram but not change it.

If you spot something that needs fixing, send a note to whoever owns the file, or use one of the full Visio options further down to edit it yourself.

Step 5: Print or share the diagram

To print, use Visio Viewer or a full Visio product, because Microsoft describes the free web view as read-only viewing. When you print with Visio Viewer, the drawing prints from your web browser, not from Visio.

To share the diagram and talk it through with your team, Microsoft Teams is the easier route. In Teams, team members can view, comment on and share Visio diagrams with or without a Visio license.

What Visio Viewer can and cannot do

With Visio Viewer, you can open, view or print Visio drawings, even if you don’t have Visio installed. You cannot edit, save or create a new drawing with it. For that, Microsoft says you need a full version of Visio.

A few things to expect when you open a drawing, all from Microsoft’s Visio Viewer page:

  • The drawing appears inside a browser window.
  • If the drawing has more than one page, the pages show as tabs along the bottom of the viewer.
  • Stencils, panes, rulers, guides and guide points are not displayed.
  • Custom fill styles, line styles and some line ends might not look the same as they do in Visio.
  • Printing happens from your web browser, not from Visio.

That last pair matters if you’re checking a detailed drawing. If the styling looks a little different from what the author described, it may be the viewer rather than the file.

View and comment in Microsoft Teams

If your team already works in Teams, this is often the smoothest option. Team members can view, comment on and share Visio diagrams in Teams, with or without a Visio license.

That covers the most common need after “can I open it”: leaving feedback on someone else’s diagram. Microsoft describes the overall offer as a way to view, explore and comment on Visio diagrams for free.

Viewing on a Mac, iPhone or iPad

If you were looking for a Visio viewer for Mac, the browser is the way in. There is no desktop version of Visio for macOS, but Visio for the web works in Safari or Chrome on a Mac, which means Steps 1 to 4 above work the same way on a MacBook. For every Visio option on a Mac, including editing, see our Visio for Mac guide.

On the go, Visio files stored online can be viewed on iPhone and iPad. Keep the file in OneDrive and you can open it from the device you have with you.

When you need full Visio

Viewing, commenting and printing are covered by the free options. To edit, create or save a diagram, you need a Visio product.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free Visio viewer?

Yes. Microsoft lets you view, explore and comment on Visio diagrams for free, through Visio for the web and Microsoft Teams. Visio Viewer also opens, views and prints Visio drawings, even if you don’t have Visio installed.

Can I edit a VSDX file with Visio Viewer?

No. You cannot edit, save or create a new Visio drawing with Visio Viewer. For that, you need a full version of Visio.

How do I open a Visio file without Visio on a Mac?

Sign in to your Microsoft 365 account, upload the file to OneDrive and select it to open a read-only view in Visio for the web. On a Mac, Visio for the web works in Safari or Chrome.

Can I view Visio files in Teams without a license?

Yes. In Microsoft Teams, team members can view, comment on and share Visio diagrams with or without a Visio license.

Does Visio Viewer show everything in my drawing?

Not quite. Visio Viewer doesn’t display stencils, panes, rulers, guides and guide points, and custom fill styles, line styles and some line ends might not look the same. Drawings with more than one page show each page as a tab along the bottom.

Can Visio open older .vsd files?

Yes. Microsoft’s Visio plans comparison lists backward compatibility to open and view .vsd files created with Visio 2000 and later versions. If you are working with an older file, that is the line to check against the plan you are considering.

What do I need to edit a Visio diagram?

You need a Visio product. Visio Plan 2, Visio Professional 2024 and Visio Standard 2024 give you the desktop app, and Visio Plan 2 adds the web app. Not sure which fits? Contact support and we’ll fix it: support@solveditservices.com or use our contact page.
