Microsoft Visio is Microsoft’s desktop diagramming app for flowcharts, org charts, network diagrams, and floor plans. The one-time-purchase version comes in two editions: Visio Standard 2024 and Visio Professional 2024.
Both share the same app, the same look, and the same core drawing tools. The difference is what kinds of diagrams you can make and whether your diagrams can connect to live data. This guide breaks down exactly what each edition includes, based on Microsoft’s own comparison, and matches each one to the people who typically need it.
The quick answer
- Visio Standard 2024 is for everyday business diagrams: flowcharts, swimlanes, org charts, mind maps, basic network diagrams, timelines, and office layouts.
- Visio Professional 2024 includes everything in Standard, plus specialist templates for IT, software, engineering, and process work, and tools to link shapes to live data.
If you’re not sure you need any of the Professional-only features listed below, Standard is likely enough.
What both editions have in common
According to Microsoft, Visio Standard 2024 and Visio Professional 2024 are both:
- Licensed for one user and one PC.
- The Visio desktop app for Windows. Microsoft lists Windows 11 and Windows 10 as supported.
- Sold separately from Microsoft 365. Microsoft notes that Visio isn’t included in the Microsoft 365 suite.
Microsoft also says the new Visio 2024 features, including the updated look, the Office 2024 theme, and the new search bar, are included in both editions unless noted.
Shared tools include:
- Basic and cross-functional (swimlane) flowcharts, and block diagrams.
- Org charts, including automatic org chart generation from Excel, Exchange, or Microsoft Entra ID.
- Mind maps, sticky notes, and brainstorming templates.
- Floor plans, office layouts, and directional maps.
- Basic network diagram templates and shapes.
- Gantt chart, PERT chart, timeline, to-do list, and weekly planner templates.
- Cause-and-effect, fault tree, audit, and EPC diagrams.
- Business frameworks like PESTLE and value chain.
- DWG file import, saving and sharing diagrams in OneDrive, and copying diagrams into Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Information Rights Management (IRM) and tools to document GDPR data flows.
- Accessibility features, including Narrator, Accessibility Checker, and high-contrast support.
That’s a lot. For many offices, it’s everything they’ll ever draw.
What only Visio Professional 2024 adds
Microsoft’s comparison lists these features in Professional but not Standard.
Specialist templates and shapes
- Detailed network diagrams, plus rack and LDAP directory diagrams.
- Cloud architecture: hundreds of Azure and AWS shapes, and Kubernetes shapes.
- Software and database: ERD and UML diagrams, and web and mobile wireframes.
- Process modeling: BPMN and IDEF0 content, plus SDL diagrams.
- Business improvement: ITIL diagrams, PivotDiagrams, Six Sigma process maps, and value stream maps.
- Engineering: electrical schematics and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID).
- Facilities: HVAC plans and plant layouts.
Data and standards tools
- Link shapes to data from multiple sources, including Excel, SharePoint lists, and SQL Server.
- Automatic data refresh, on a schedule or manually.
- Data graphics, such as icon sets, color by value, text callouts, and data bars.
- Create a database model from an existing database.
- Support for UML 2.5, and extended support for BPMN 2.0 and IEEE standards.
- Diagram validation with built-in and custom business rules.

Which edition fits your job?
Office managers, HR, and operations: Standard
If you draw process flowcharts, org charts, onboarding workflows, seating plans, or project timelines, Standard covers it. Automatic org charts from Excel or Entra ID are included in both editions, so HR teams don’t need Professional for that.
IT administrators and MSPs: usually Professional
Standard has basic network diagrams, which work for a simple office network. If you document server racks, detailed network topology, Active Directory or LDAP structures, or cloud setups in Azure or AWS, those templates are Professional only. Professional’s data linking also lets you connect diagram shapes to an inventory spreadsheet or SQL Server table.
Developers and database administrators: Professional
ERD and UML diagrams, wireframes, and creating a database model from an existing database are Professional only.
Engineers and facilities teams: Professional
Electrical schematics, P&ID, HVAC plans, and plant layouts are Professional only. Office layouts and basic floor plans are in both.
Business analysts and process improvement: Professional
If you work with BPMN 2.0, value stream maps, Six Sigma, or ITIL, or you want Visio to validate diagrams against a standard, choose Professional.
A simple decision checklist
Pick Professional if you answer yes to any of these:
- Do you need rack, detailed network, LDAP, Azure, AWS, or Kubernetes diagrams?
- Do you draw ERD, UML, or app wireframes?
- Do you need engineering, P&ID, HVAC, or plant layout templates?
- Do you model processes in BPMN, IDEF0, or SDL, or need diagram validation?
- Do you want shapes linked to Excel, SharePoint, or SQL Server data that refreshes automatically?
If every answer is no, Visio Standard 2024 is the right fit.
What about a Visio subscription?
Microsoft also sells Visio as a subscription. Microsoft says Visio Plan 2 includes the same capabilities as Visio Professional 2024, plus some cloud-only features, and lets each user install Visio on up to five PCs. It’s a good fit if you’d rather pay over time. If you prefer to buy once for a single PC, Visio Standard 2024 or Visio Professional 2024 is the simpler choice.
Buying for a team
Each Visio 2024 license covers one user on one PC, so count the people who actually make diagrams. Many teams mix editions, with Standard for most staff and Professional for IT or engineering. For several licenses, request a quote and we’ll put the order together.
