Visio 2021 vs 2024 comes down to a few additions: Visio 2024 adds new shapes and stencils, the Office 2024 look, and search in the title bar. Visio 2021 includes the core toolset most teams use every day.
Visio 2021 and Visio 2024 are both one-time-purchase versions of Microsoft’s desktop diagramming app for Windows. Each comes in a Standard and a Professional edition, and both versions open the same Visio files.
So what actually changed between them? This guide covers what each version includes, based on Microsoft’s own “What’s new” pages, and helps you choose the one that fits the diagrams you make.
The quick answer
Visio 2024 adds new shapes and stencils (including new icons, sticky notes, and infographics, plus 10+ new Azure stencils and Kubernetes shapes in Professional), a refreshed look with the Office 2024 theme, and search in the title bar.
Visio 2021 includes the core Visio toolset most teams use every day: templates, thousands of shapes, data-linked diagrams, and (in Professional) Azure and AWS stencils, UML, ERD, and BPMN support.
Microsoft says that if you move from Visio 2021 to Visio 2024, “you’ll still have all the features you’re used to,” and you’ll see a few new ones.
If your team already works in Visio 2021 or the 2021 feature set covers your diagrams, Visio 2021 is a perfectly good choice. If you want the newest shape content and the Office 2024 look, choose Visio 2024.
What both versions have in common
Visio 2021 and Visio 2024 share a lot:
What Visio 2024 adds
Microsoft’s “What’s new in Visio 2024” page lists four areas. Unless Microsoft notes otherwise, these are in both Visio Standard 2024 and Visio Professional 2024.
More shapes, stencils, and templates
- Visio Standard 2024 adds many new icons, sticky notes for brainstorming, and infographics such as pictograms and to-do lists.
- Visio Professional 2024 includes all of that, plus 10+ new Azure stencils and more network and software content, such as Kubernetes shapes and Yourdon-Coad notations.
A sleeker look
Visio 2024 has an updated appearance, with a modern transparency effect behind the canvas and menus.
The Office 2024 theme
Visio 2024 uses the new Office 2024 theme and color palette, so it looks consistent with Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2024. Microsoft describes the more vibrant hues as part of its commitment to accessibility.
Search in the title bar
Search now sits in the title bar, like in other Office apps, so it’s easier to find commands and features.
What Visio 2021 brought (and still includes)
Microsoft’s “What’s new in Visio Professional 2021” page lists what Visio 2021 added over Visio 2019. You get all of these in Visio Professional 2021 today, and Visio 2024 carries them forward:
Microsoft also highlights team co-editing, linking diagrams to data, and Information Rights Management in Visio Professional 2021.

Which version fits how you work?
Choose Visio 2021 if…
Choose Visio 2024 if…
Standard or Professional?
That choice works the same way in both versions. Standard covers everyday business diagrams. Professional adds the advanced and technical diagram types plus collaboration tools. For a full breakdown, see our guide to Visio 2024 Standard vs Professional.
Mixing versions on one team
Because both versions use the same file format, a team can mix Visio 2021 and Visio 2024 without file-conversion problems. A diagram saved in Visio 2024 opens in Visio 2021, and the other way round.
If a PC also runs Microsoft 365 Apps, Microsoft says it needs Version 2108 or later to install Visio 2021 alongside it, or Version 2408 or later for Visio 2024. All Office, Visio, and Project products on one PC must also use the same bit version (32-bit or 64-bit).
What about Visio Plan 2?
Visio Plan 2 is Microsoft’s subscription version. Microsoft says it includes the Visio desktop app and the web app, can be installed on up to five PCs per user, and keeps updating with new features while the subscription is active. Visio Standard and Visio Professional (2021 or 2024) are one-time purchases. If a subscription suits your team better, see Visio Online Plan 2 (one-year license), or request a quote for several users.
